Invite your neighbors or friends to view or listen to General Conference. It is a good way for non-Mormons to anonymously learn about LDS beliefs without the commitment of attending a Mormon church service on Sunday or meeting with the missionaries.

This is a photo of the apron we are making at our FABULOUS FRIDAY RS CRAFT NIGHT.
There is no cost for the class, but you will need to purchase your fabric and any trim you wish to add to your apron/s. I suggest Joannes in Thousand Oaks off Moorpark exit. You might have a coupon which would help take a little off your price. They have some very cute fabric. This pattern is not difficult, but is a bit time consuming. Because of the ruffles there is time in finishing the edges of the ruffles and gathering. BUT it is not difficult.

Please be sure to bring your sewing machine, sharp scissors, thread (you may need a couple of different colors if applying trim), seam ripper, measuring tape and pins. I will have a couple of ironing boards set up for you.

Here is the outline of the fabric you will need-this is for the size displayed Sunday:
Body of apron: 3/4 yard
Ties & bottom ruffle: 1 yard
1st ruffle: 1/2 yard
2nd ruffle: 1/2 yard
Trim for ruffle: 1 1/2 yards
Trim for pocket: 8 inches

I used 4 coordinating fabrics. You may use 2 or 3 if you wish-it's your apron!

General Relief Society Broadcast

Tonight was a great evening. Many women from the stake joined with each other in service projects ranging from decorating chocolate bars to tying quilts for our men and women in the armed forces. The stake put together a delicious 'sack lunch' dinner for the sisters. Inside our little brown bags we found croissant, chicken salad, coleslaw, chips and a chocolate cookie.The General Relief Society Broadcast first speaker was Relief Society President, Julie B. Beck, followed by Sister Silvia H. Allred, 1st Counselor and then 2nd Counselor Barbara Thompson. The concluding speaker was Prophet Thomas S. Monson.

Lesson #17 The Church of Jesus Christ Today

The Church of Jesus Christ was taken from the earth shortly after the Savior's death and resurrection. After he ascended into heaven men changed the ordinances and doctrines that He and His Apostles had established. Because of the apostasy, there was no direct revelation from God. The true Church was no longer on the earth. Men organized different churches that claimed to be true but taught conflicting doctrines. There was much confusion and contention over religion. The Lord had foreseen these conditions of apostasy saying there would be a "famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but a hearing the words of the Lord...They shall...seek the word of the Lord, and shall not find it". (Amos 8:11-12)

For many years people lived in spiritual darkness. The Restoration of the fulness of the gospel is a "marvellous work". Why is that? In the spring of 1820 a young boy, Joseph Smith wanted to know which of all the churches was the true Church of Jesus Christ. He went into the woods near his home and prayed humbly and intently to his Heavenly Father asking which church he should join. On that morning a miraculous thing happened. Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ appeared to Joseph Smith. The Savior told him not to join any church because the true Church was not on the earth.

Authority from God was restored to the earth once more. God again gave the priesthood to men. John the Baptist came in 1829 to confer the Aaronic Priesthood on Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery. Then Peter, James, and John, the presidency of the Church in ancient times came and gave Joseph and Oliver the Melchizedek Priesthood and the keys of the kingdom of God. On April 6, 1830, the Savior again directed the organizing of His Church on the earth. His Church is called The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Christ is the head of His Church today just as he was in ancient times. The Church was organized with the same offices as were in the ancient Church. That organization included apostles, prophets, seventies, evangelists (patriarchs), pastors (presiding officers), high priests, elders,bishops, priests, teachers, and deacons.

The Church today teaches the same principles and performs the same ordinances as were performed in the days of Jesus. The first principles and ordinances of the gospel are faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, repentance, baptism by immersion, and the laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost. These precious truths were returned in their fulness when the Church was restored. The mission of the Church is as Christ said, "This Gospel of the Kingdom shall be preached in all the world, for a witness unto all nations" (Joseph Smith-Matthew 1:31) The Church will never again be taken from the earth. Its mission is to take the truth to every person. Thousands of years ago, the Lord said He would 'set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people,...and it shall stand for ever" (Daniel 2:44)

RS Lesson #16; The Church of Jesus Christ in Former Times by Donna M.

Features that identify the Church of Jesus Christ are Revelation, Authority from God, The Church Organization, First Principles and Ordinances and Ordinances Performed for the Dead.

As stated in Article of Faith 1:6, "We believe in the same organization that existed in the Primitive Church, namely, apostles, prophets, pastors, teachers, evangelists, and so forth".

Jesus established His Church when He was on the earth. It was called the Church of Jesus Christ and the members were called Saints (see Ephesians 2:19-20 and 3 Nephi 27:8"

After Jesus was resurrected, he visited the people in the Americas and organized His Church among them, teaching the people for three days and then returning often for some time thereafter (see 3 Nephi 11-28).

Throughout history, evil people have tried to destroy the work of God. This happened while the Apostles were still alive and supervising the young, growing Church. God had foreseen the Apostasy and prepared the gospel to be restored. The Apostle Peter spoke of this to the Jews: "He shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you: whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began" (Acts 3:20-21).

We are so fortunate to live in a time when the fullness of the Gospel is available on the earth. We are blessed with modern day revelation from God's Prophet on the earth today, President Thomas S. Monson. Do we realize the significance of this in our lives today? In just 3 weeks we will have the opportunity to hear a Prophet's voice for ourselves when we watch General Conference.

General Relief Society Meeting Saturday, September 25, 2010

Be sure to mark your calenders for Saturday, September 25th! It's time again for the General Relief Society Meeting broadcast from Salt Lake at 7:00 PM. Please come and join with other sisters in the Stake before the broadcast for a wonderful evening of service and dinner.

"We invite you to join together as we INCREASE OUR FAITH and STRENGTHEN OUR FAMILY-we will hear counsel from our General Relief Society Presidency and a member of teh First Presidency. Sisters will be tying quilts, wrapping candybars and stuffing stockings all to be shipped to our men & women in the Armed Forces. After we will have a wonderful dinner which will be followed by the broadcast.

RS Lesson: The Temple is a Place of Refuge by Bonnie

The Temple Is A Place Of Refuge

Why do we have temples? To make covenants, receive our endowment, do work for the dead. Is our only purpose in returning to the temple to do vicarious work for our dead? “So often we relate the temples to the vicarious ordinances that are performed there for those who are deceased. Certainly this is a vital part of temple work. But there is another aspect of temple activity that has great importance for living members. . . . the spiritually uplifting, strengthening influence in [our] lives that results from regular temple attendance.” [ Elder Dean L. Larsen, Of the Presidency of the Seventy, Ensign, Apr. 1993]

We are told in D&C 88:119 “Organize yourselves; prepare every needful thing; and establish a house, even a house of prayer, a house of fasting, a house of faith, a house of learning, house of glory, a house of order, a house of God.”

Lets add to that what we learn in the 4^th chapter of Isaiah which tells us of the protecting power of the Lord’s house. Isaiah tells to us that in our day the Lord promises to

5 ‘create upon every dwelling place of mount Zion, and upon her assemblies, a cloud and smoke and the shining of a flaming fire by night : for upon all the glory shall be a defense.

6 ‘And there shall be a tabernacle for . . . a place of refuge”

Isaiah is telling us that in the last days we will have the promised protection of the Lord day and night over our homes and our stakes if we are worthy by our faithfulness to our covenants made in His Temple and that the temple will be a place of refuge for us.

So –we know that the Temple is a house of prayer, a house of fasting, a house of faith, a house of learning, house of glory, a house of order, a house of God and a place of refuge.

D&C 101: 22 tells us we that when the problems of the last days are upon us, we should “stand in holy places.’ What if we read the word “stand” to mean ‘make a stand’ or defend a position. If we read this verse in this manner then we see that the Lord is telling us “Latter-day Saints, make your stand against evil in holy places.”

Three of those holy places are our homes, stakes and the temple. “In these places we can defeat Satan. These positions we must defend. In them we will make our stand. We can triumph over the adversary only if we protect the home, the stake, and the temple. They, in turn, will give us protection. Here we will have the Lord’s glory to defend and help us. We simply cannot allow the forces of the world to invade these three sacred places. If we do, the battle, indeed the war, will be lost.” [S. Michael Wilcox, House of Glory, p. 58]

Do we need refuge? Aren’t we engaged daily in a battle with forces of evil and temptation? How do we keep our children and grandchildren from being overcome by the forces of evil?

Do you ever feel as though you are about to be swept away by the powerful forces of the adversary. At those times, wouldn’t it be comforting to have the Lord say: Come to my place of refuge and rest. The enemy cannot enter here. Let your fears subside. Be strengthened and rejuvenated. The battle does not rage within these walls. The righteous can seek safety here. When you return to the battle you can wield your sword with renewed strength and assurance of victory.

Look at the temple—it looks like a fortress. Our modern day Apostles and leaders of the church have counseled us about the protecting powers of Temple worship. Elder Boyd K. Packer taught, “No work is more of a protection to this Church than temple work. . . . No work is more spiritually refining. No work we do gives us more power. . . . Our labors in the temple cover us with a shield and a protection, both individually and as a people.” [The Holy Temple, p 265] Elder John A. Widtsoe testified that, “Men grow mighty under the results of temple service, women grow strong under it; the community increases in power; until the devil has less influence than he ever had before.” President Joseph Fielding Smith said, “If we go into the temple, we raise our hands and covenant that we will serve the Lord and observe his commandments and keep ourselves unspotted from the world. If we realize what we are doing then the endowment will be a protection to us all our lives—a protection which a man who does not go to the temple does not have.” [“The Pearl of Great Price,” Utah Genealogical and Historical Magazine, July 1930, p 103] Elder Vaughn J. Featherstone promised, “that all who faithfully attend to temple work [will have] unseen angels watch over [their] loved ones when satanic forces tempt them.” [In Royden G. Derrick, Temples in the Last Days, p. 103]

Sister Beck tells us, “I would suggest that each of us go to the temple and pay attention. Pay attention in the temple to what is happening, how things happen, the blessings that are given, who are they given by, and the powers that come to you. Listen to the words of the temple ordinances and learn the powers that the Lord has given you through His priesthood.”

We have studied numerous examples of the protecting powers of the temple in the Old Testament this year. In 2 Chronicles king Hezekiah opened the doors of the Temple, he brought back the priests. He invited the northern tribes back to the Temple. [2 Chron. 30:1-9] Under Hezekiah, the tribe of Judah was protected from attack by the Assyrian army while the northern tribes were captured and lost.

The simple act of returning to service in the temple can offer protection against danger. Our families face an invading army of evil just as dangerous as the Assyrians—if we ask the Lord for protection and we enter into his sanctuary we can also expect His blessings and His protection.

Joseph Smith made reference to the spiritual strength that can come from temple activity in the dedicatory prayer of the Kirtland Temple which is recorded in D&C 109. He petitions the Father for blessings to come to the Saints from temple worship. Some of those requested blessings were that the Saints who enter the Temple will feel the Lord’s power [vs. 12]; the Saints would go forth from the Temple armed with power, with angels to watch over them [vs. 22]; that no weapons formed against them could prosper [vs. 25]; that no combination of wickedness would prevail over the Saints [vs. 26]; that the Lord would fight the battles for His people and deliver them from the hands of their enemies [vs. 28]; that the Lord would deliver the Saints from calamity [vs. 46].

What we need to do to qualify for those blessings is to seek diligently, teach one another out of the best books [vs.7]; we must organize and prepare every needful thing [vs.8]; we must act as the Lord’s people at all times [vs.9]; we must be clean to enter the Temple [vs.20]; and, we must hold a recommend to enter [vs.24]. Look at how little we must do to receive such great blessings. Don’t you think that the Lord’s protection alone is sufficient repayment for our efforts in going to the Temple?

Do we understand, as a people, the protection we obtain by attending the temple and worshipping there? Do we understand that we have a place of refuge from the world in the Temple? Do we underestimate the protecting power of the Temple? Are we attending the Temple often enough to obtain the promised blessings of the Lord’s protection? I testify that if we will trust in the Lord’s promises, the temple will play an increasingly important role in our lives and our families.

4th of July Flag Raising Ceremony & Breakfast

Monday, July 5th Camarillo 2nd and 5th Wards joined together and celebrated the 4th.

The program started with a flag raising ceremony by the Camarillo 2nd Ward Scouts. Bro. Hanson conducted the program. Everyone took a moment to honor the men and women in the audience who had served in the armed forces. The program followed with a rousing patriotic music, a musical number by the combined Primary children, youth speaker Jason, primary age speaker, Cory and main speaker Bro. Malan. Bro. Malan shared with the audience an excerpt from David McCullough's book "1776".

A delicious breakfast prepared by the Camarillo 5th Ward was enjoyed by all. Everyone who attended commented on what a wonderful program and great food they enjoyed.

After breakfast the children took to their bikes, scooters and skateboards, which they had decorated red, white and blue, and they raced around the parking lot.

Well done Activities Committees! Let's do this again next year!

Relief Society Lesson #10: Scriptures by Donna

Lesson 10 "Scriptures" was a wonderful opportunity to hear sisters share their 'favorite' scripture and, perhaps, the experience endearing them to the particular scripture. As members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we accept four books under the designation of the standard works of the Church: the Bible, Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants and the Pearl of Great Price. In addition, inspired words of our living prophets are also accepted as scripture. The participation from sisters reinforced the blessing the scriptures are in our lives, the strength they give, and the inspiration to continue in times of trial and challenge. What would you share as a favorite scripture that has given you strength and encouragement? Here are some of those shared on Sunday.

RS Lesson: Music by Linn

It has been said that music is the speech of angels-It speaks in a language more powerful than words. Many great composers say that God has spoken to them through music and enlightened them: Mozart, Bach, Brahms, Beethoven, Schubert.

Beautiful uplifting music has the power to heal us both spiritually and physically-It has the power to drive evil away. Even in Old Testiment times they understood the power of music to heal. The young shepherd boy David used his harp to spiritually heal Saul. (1 Samuel 16)

The spirit of God dwells in great music - anything that is not comfortable in the presence of that spirit will depart. Evil and light cannot coexist because evil cannot tolerate the presence of light. Not only does music have power to heal us spiritually - it also has power to heal us physically. It allows our mind to take us away from pain, to take us back to good times, to help us feel younger and more vital.

Music can teach and inspire-President Lee: "the most inspired preaching is always accompanied by beautiful, inspired music." Music stimulates the entire brain. Both the left and right side work together as we process music which helps us remember and problem solve. It has the power to put order in our mind.

Music can lift and comfort-The words of hymns and beautiful music can bring us comfort and courage, lift our spirits, and help us overcome discouragement. During the dark days of Winter Quarters the Lord revealed to Brigham Young that the camp should: "praise the Lord with singing, with music, with dancing, and with a prayer of praise and thanksgiving" D&C 136:28. The Savior used music to give him courage and strength as He prepared to go out and complete His greatest test. In Mark we read: “And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives.” Mark 14:26

Teaching For Our Times - May 2010
This month we studied and discussed the Conference Talk given by Elder Bruce A. Carlson titled "WHEN THE LORD COMMANDS." A wonderful inspirational "pep" talk to members every where that faithful obedience, regardless of the apparent size of the task (a.k.a. commandment, covenant, ordinance or doctrine), will bring the Lord's guidance, assistance and peace. Big or small, if we think it applies to us or not, whether we deem it important or think it is just too hard. We can and need to make sure we obey and do it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! In other words.....There is NO shortcut any where worth going. In our case - heaven. ( I wish these were my words of wisdom - they aren't but I think they are brilliant!)
I love Elder Carlson's closing scripture from the D&C: "I, the Lord, am merciful and gracious unto those who fear me, and DELIGHT to honor those who serve me in righteousness and in truth unto the end."
Sisters, Let's strive each day to do those things that we've been asked to do, so our Father may continue to shower us and our families with the blessings of heaven.

What 'theme' would be fitting to honor such wonderful women?
"A Few of My Favorite Things" seemed perfect as these amazing women are a few of our favorite things. Displayed at their banquet table was a photo of each of them from their younger years. The highlight of the evening was the privilege we each had as we listened as each of these seasoned women shared with us stories from their life. Some shared stories of their work as a teacher for many years, their work as a nurse and they care they gave, another story of living for a year off the land and raising horses. The stories were as diverse and interesting as the sisters themselves.

RS Visiting Teaching Conference: Recipe for a Mother's Heart

For those of you who were not able to attend the annual Relief Society Visiting Teaching Conference, we are so sorry. For you missed quite a treat; both a Spiritual treat and a more sugary, delicious Cupcake treat!
Sisters were asked to don their kitchen aprons and were greeted by over 200 cupcakes as they walked into the multipurpose room. Chocolate Cupcakes with Cream Cheese frosting, Yellow Cupcakes with Chocolate frosting, Coconut Cupcakes with Coconut frosting and many, many more.
How does "Cupcakes" tie into Visiting Teaching you may ask? Well, it ties in with the recipe. Just as cupcakes are made with specific ingredients, so is a Mother's Heart.CHARITY: Just as the egg is the binding agent in cupcakes, Charity is a binding ingredient in our lives. Charity is the pure love of Christ.
Corinthians 13:1-4, "Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing. And though bestow all my goods to fee the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing. Charity suffereth long and is kind, charity envieth not, charity vaunteth not itself is not puffed up."
President Heber J. DEVOTION/FAITH: Just as baking powder is a leavening agent, faith helps us to rise to new heights. Elder Jeffrey R. Holland said, "Mothers, we acknowledge and esteem your faith in every footstep. Please know that it is worth it then, now and forever...Yours is the work of salvation, and therefore you will be magnified, compensated, made more than you are and better than you have ever been as you try to make honest effort, however feeble you may sometimes feel that to be."
PATIENCE: Flavor; salt. Every recipe calls for a little salt. Only a little is needed, but if you leave it out, it ruins the recipe. "One moment of patience may ward off great disaster. One moment of impatience may ruin a whole life." Chinese Proverb. "Patience is bitter, but its fruit is sweet" Phaedrus
HARMONY: Just as Harmony is sweet so is the Sugar needed in our recipe. President James E. Faust said, "There is no greater good in all the world than motherhood. The influence of a mother in the lives of her children is beyond calculation." How do our thoughts influence what we radiate to others? "If there is righteousness in the heart there will be beauty in the character. If there is beauty in the character there will be harmony in the home. If there is harmony in the home there will be order in the nation. If there is order in the nation there will be peace in the world." Chinese Proverb
GENEROSITY/WILLING TO SACRIFICE & SERVE: Often we shed tears as we sacrifice and serve. Just as our tears are liquid, we need liquid in our recipe to moisten our batter allowing other ingredients, like baking soda, to work. Proverbs 31: "Who can find a ...woman (with a mother's heart) for her price is far above rubies...She...worketh willingly with her hands...She riseth also while it is yet night,and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens. She stretcheth out her hand to the poor....Strength and honor are her clothing...She openeth her mouth with wisdom, and in her tongue is the law of kindness. She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness. Her children arise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her."HUMILITY: An essential ingredient, just as the flour is essential to our recipe being a success. D&C 89:14 tells us that bread is the staff of life. Flour is an essential ingredient in the staff of life. D&C 112:10 "Be thou humble; and the Lord thy God shall lead thee by the hand,and give thee answer to thy prayers." Matthew 18:4 "Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven." Christ is the perfect example of humility. He came to serve not to be served and He did serve-God first, others second and Himself last. Matthew 20:28, "Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many."
A woman with a Mother's Heart has a "special selflessness, rocks a sobbing child without wondering if todays world is passing you by because you know you hold tomorrow tightly in your arms. God trusts woman to much that he lets them bear and care for his spirit children." Elder Neil Maxwell
We hope that this year as you prepare to visit your sisters in the capacity of a Visiting Teacher that you will recall some of these scriptures and quotes. Use them in our life as you nurture and love those you Visit Teach as well as those you serve in your family.

"What we know is not always reflected it what we do." Doesn't that give us some food for thought? The way we respond to tantrums, rude drivers, unmet expectations, moody teenagers, messes on the floor, missed opportunities, whatever it is. Who can't improve in making what we do consistent with what we know? I know I sure can!

Sunday afternoon Elder Holland delivered a great testimony of the Book of Mormon. The Spirit that accompanied his talk was unmistakable and could have converted Satan himself. Even all of our children sat and were anxiously engaged in the entire talk. He reminded us all how true the Book of Mormon is; not a single person has been able to question its validity. As he states, “For 179 years this book has been examined and attacked, denied and deconstructed, targeted and torn apart like perhaps no other book in modern religious history-perhaps like no other book in any religious history. And still it stands……..”

Becoming Saviors on Mount Zion lesson by Heidi Yeates

Chapter 41: Becoming Saviors on Mount Zion

This lesson discusses the commencement of proxy baptisms (and other saving ordinances) in this last dispensation. The Lord was specific about the way things are to be done: in His temple with proper witnessing and recording of ordinances done in behalf of our deceased ancestors.

The doctrine of salvation for the dead demonstrates the great love the mercy the Lord has for us, and the fairness of the plan of Salvation. All those who did not have the opportunity to accept the gospel in this life will have that chance in the spirit world, but their ordinances must be performed here, on Earth.

That is how we become saviors on Mount Zion, by doing for others what they cannot do for themselves. Joseph Smith said, "The greatest responsibility in this world that God has laid upon us is to seek after our dead." " For we without them cannot be made perfect; neither can they without us be made perfect . . . ."

I would invite all those who were unable to attend Relief Society (and those that were there, as well) to read the chapter in its entirety.

Stake Relief Society Service Project and Broadcast

Sisters from all wards in the Stake gathered Saturday evening for service and socializing. Many worked on File Folder Games and visited while they ate a delicious "Sack Lunch".
Many worked on assembling School Kits for children who have no school supplies.

The best of the evening was the General Relief Society Broadcast from Salt Lake City. We heard Sister Beck speak about "Relief Society is a Faith Based Work". (click HERE to hear her talk) We were also instructed that ALL Relief Society functions will now be referred to as "Relief Society".
"Home, Family, and Personal Enrichment" as a term will no longer be used.
Sister Allread spoke and Sister Thompson spoke about "Minding the Gap" and President Eyring closed the meeting with faith inspiring stories and testimony.

Our ward has been asked to provide toys and quilts to the Humanitarian Aid. We are looking for donations of fabric and batting for quilts. If you would like more information on how you can help, please click here

Lifting Dark Clouds by Bonnie

We have all felt the dark clouds of trials, it is how we are tested. "The Lord makes no secret that He will test our faith and our obedience. ‘We will prove them herewith . . . to see if they will do all things whatsoever the Lord their God shall command them.” Elder Adhemar Damiani Our loving Father has reassured us that His ‘great plan of happiness’ was founded on faith, not on fear of failure. . . . The central figure in this plan, the true Deliverer, is the Lord Jesus Christ. . . .[W]e cannot now recall what we learned in those glorious courts on high. Instead of simply remembering, we are required to learn of and develop faith in God’s promised deliverance.Elder Lowell M. Snow, Ensign, Dec 2007. The atonement is not just for sin but to heal our “pains and afflictions and temptations of every kind,” it is for the relief of "the sickness of the Lord's people" and their infirmities. Alma 7:11-12.

The story of Job in the Bible tells us that Job was a just and perfect man who was greatly blessed. The Lord allowed Job to be tried. Job lost everything and suffered physically. When he despaired he was told, "Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth; therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty." Job 5:17. Job testified "Though he slay me, yet will I trust in the Lord....He also shall be my salvation." Job 13:15-16.

What about Nephi. He “was constantly faced with privations and difficulties. Nevertheless he said that they ‘lived after the manner of happiness’ (2 Nephi 5:27). Elder Cecil O. Samuelson Jr., Ensign, Apri 2009. Nephi turned to the Lord in times of trial and his brothers murmured and complained. What made Nephi different? Nephi recognized that he “was led by the Spirit, not knowing beforehand the things which [he] should do.” (1 Nephi 4:6) He had faith in the Lord’s deliverance “I will go and do the thing that the Lord commands” because I know that He will provide a way to accomplish it.(1Nephi 3:7) The difference is that Nephi knew “that the Lord is able to do all things according to his will,” for his children if they exercise faith in him.(1Nephi 7:12) "Nephi understood that there is a pattern for living that results in happiness, independent of the difficulties, challenges, and disappointments that come into all of our lives. He was able to focus on the big picture of God’s plan for him and his people and was thus able to avoid being brought down by [the fact] that life is not fair. It isn’t fair, but [Nephi] and his people were happy nevertheless.” [Elder Cecil O. Samuelson Jr., Ensign, April 2009]

Trials, afflictions, and suffering are like dark clouds that rain down on the good as well as the wicked. “Suffering is universal; how we react to suffering is individual. Suffering . . . can be a strengthening and purifying experience combined with faith, or it can be a destructive force in our lives if we do not have the faith in the Lord’s atoning sacrifice.”[Elder Robert D. Hales, Ensign, Nov. 1983 ] “The reason for some of these trials cannot be readily understood except on the basis of faith and hope because there is often a larger purpose which we do not always understand.” [President James E. Faust, Ensign, Nov. 1999]

If we will have faith and hope, we will have peace. “Faith and hope are constantly interactive, and may not always be precisely distinguished or sequenced. . . . Just as doubt, [and] despair . . . go together, so do faith, hope and charity. . . . those who look forward to a next and better world are usually ‘anxiously engaged’ in improving this one, for they ‘always abound in good works.’ . . . While weak hope leaves us at the mercy of our moods and events, ‘brightness of hope’ produces illuminated individuals. . . . Such hope permits us to ‘press forward’ even when dark clouds oppress.” [ 2 Nep. 31:16, 20] [Elder Neal A. Maxwell, Ensign, Nov 1994] “Hope, charity, and faith. . . . become stronger because of their association with each other. . . . When a woman loses hope, she will also lose faith and charity. . . . When hope leaves us, despair ensues. . . . Hope is a steadying influence [that keeps] us from drifting aimlessly. . . . Truly, the Lord Jesus Christ is our hope.” [Elaine L. Jack, Ensign, March 1992]

COOKIE DOUGH PARABLE

You know, life is a lot like cookie dough. Though any ingredient alone may not taste that great, each is essential to the recipe to make scrumptious cookies. It only works when the ingredients are combined according to the correct recipe or plan. And you can’t leave anything out, not even a pinch of salt. Think of salt as the bitter experiences, or adversity and affliction in life. Without the salt there isn’t anything to balance the sweet parts of life. We need both for our growth.

This is how the Lord works. Many times we wonder why He would let us go through adversity and hardships. But He knows that when we put these things in His order, they always work for our good. We just have to trust Him and eventually, these experiences will combine to make something phenomenal. Remember, my dear daughter, your Heavenly Father is crazy about you. He sends you flowers every spring and a sunrise every morning. He even inspired someone to make cookies! Whenever you want to talk, He’ll listen. He knows you better than anyone. He knows what experiences you need in order to stretch and reach your full potential. I know that these experiences seem hard when we are going through them, but if we will allow ourselves to be molded and fashioned by the Lord’s loving hands, he can create something marvelous of us.

“You may feel singled out when adversity enters your life. You . . . wonder, ‘Why me?’ . . . No one is exempt. . . . Learning to endure times of disappointment, suffering and sorrow is part of our on-the-job training. These experiences, while often difficult to bear at the time, are precisely the kinds of experiences that stretch our understanding, build our character. . . . Those who are happiest seem to have a way of learning from difficult times. . . . The Lord in His wisdom does not shield anyone from grief or sadness. . . . I do believe that the way we react to adversity can be a major factor in how happy and successful we can be in life. If we approach adversities wisely, our hardest times can be times of greatest growth, which in turn can lead toward times of greatest happiness.”[Elder Joseph B. Wirthlin, Ensign, Nov. 2008]

If we viewed trials differently, with an eternal perspective, perhaps as a chance for growth, the focus of our prayers would change. Instead of asking that the trial be lifted maybe we would ask for help to endure it, or how to learn and grow from it. When we focus only on the dark clouds we don’t recognize that the Lord is with us during these tests—always! We would not see His angels who are there to bear us up. If we focus only on the dark clouds we won’t be able to see beyond the trial. We won’t recognize what those dark clouds or adversity have taught us. We won’t appreciate the growth we have experienced because of these hard times. Would we learn to rely on the Lord if life was always sunny and our path was always smooth—would we learn to rely on faith and have hope in our Savior?

Emergency Prep & Food Storage Home Tour

The Stevenson's purchased these Can Storage Racks from Wal-Mart in Orem. They paid $299/each. They measure 72"x32" and are 24" deep.

Relief Society and some of their husbands attended the Emergency Prep/Food Storage Home Tour. There were demos on everything from cooking with a pizza box oven to how to can butter.

The tours started at the Porter's home. Here Gina explained what went into the process of building their shelving in their garage. She also gave tips on how to store water in your home in places you might not typically think of. She has a great set up for her food storage and covers it with upholstery fabric to keep the dust and dirt to a minimum. Also available were numerous samples of dehydrated food from Walton Feed. The applesauce was quite good!

The next tour was at the Morris's. Here sisters took advantage of the opportunity to use a hand wheat grinder. Also available for demo was an electric wheat grinder. Thanks to Angie for making her wonderful homemade white bread, we were able to sample canned butter. The butter was donated by Mardene Hanson and the recipe will be featured later on the blog. Trish Sisson made "Bread in a Mason Jar". This bread is baked and can be stored with your food storage for up to a year. We also sampled Trish's homemade Apricot jam on the delicious bread from Angie. The evening ended with delicious warm chili served at the Stevenson's home. (recipe below) Chuck shared many helpful ideas on 72 hour kits (theirs is in a large blue rolling trashcan), shelving for your canned food, (he purchased his shelving at Wal-Mart in Orem, but you can also make your own), how he engineered his continuous water filtration system for his blue water barrels and alternative cooking methods. The Stake Canner and Mylar Sealer are kept and stored at the Stevenson's. They also have available extra cans, lids, oxygen packs and mylar bags. Yvonne Hawkins brought her Solar Oven and explained the advantages of having and using one. She also constructed a Solar Oven from a pizza box! On a day with good sunshine it can heat up to 200*. Special thanks to Jared Fife and Leora Stevenson for the photos.

Leora's Chili Recipe
by Sharon

1 lb ground beef
1 cup chopped onion
3/4 c chopped green pepper
1 glove garlic minced
Brown and drain the above ingredients.
Add:
1 16 oz can cut up tomatoes
1 16 oz can kidney beans (drain & rinse)
1 8oz can tomato sauce
2 t chili powder
2 t basil
1/2 t salt
1/4 t pepper
Simmer 20 minutes and serve.

Recipe and Instructions for Canned Butter
from Mardene Hanson

1. Use any butter that is on sale. Lesser quality butter requires more shaking (see #5 below), but the results are the same as with the expensive brands.

2. Heat pint jars in a 250 degree oven for 20 minutes, without rings or seals. One pound of butter slightly more than fills one pint jar, so if you melt 11 pounds of butter, heat 12 pint jars. A roasting pan works well for holding the pint jars while in the oven.

3. While the jars are heating, melt butter slowly until it comes to a slow boil. Using a large spatula, stir the bottom of the pot often to keep the butter from scorching. Reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes at least; a good simmer time will lessen the amount of shaking required.
Place the lids in a small pot and bring to a boil, leaving the lids in simmering water until needed.

4. Stirring the melted butter from the bottom to the top with a soup ladle or small pt with a handle, pour the melted butter carefully into heated jars through a canning jar funnel. Leave 3/4" of head space in the jar, which allows room for the shaking process.

5. Carefully wipe off the top of the jars, then get a hot lid from the simmering water, add the lid and ring and tighten securely. Lids will seal as they cool. Once a few lids "ping", shake while the jars are still warm, but cool enough to handle easily, because the butter will separate and become foamy on top and white on the bottom of the jar. In a few minutes shake again, and repeat until the butter retains the same consistency throughout the jar.

6. At this point, while still slightly warm, put the jars into a refrigerator. While cooling and hardening, shake again and the melted butter will then look like butter and become firm gradually. This final shaking is very important! Check every 5 minutes and give the jars a little shake until it hardens in the jar. Leave in the refrigerator for an hour.

7. Canned butter should store for 3 years or longer on a cool, dark shelf. It does last a long time. Canned butter does not "melt" again when opened, so it does not need to be refrigerated upon opening, provided it is used within a reasonable length of time.

The total number of awards was over 100.
Many of these awards were earned at BSA Camp Emerson in Idylwilde.

Roy and Nancy Hales were married September 5, 1969.

They were married in the Los Angeles Temple.

When the Newly Weds returned home from their honeymoon they had an intimate reception at Roy's parents home, Roy Sr. & Dorthy Hales.

They took a Honeymoon trip to New Mexico in, what would now be considered a classic, Mustang. A few years ago Nancy found a Mustang from that same year and had it restored for Roy as a gift for their anniversary.

Angels In the Outfield-Visiting Teaching Conference

We are all on a team, our “Relief Society” team. Our position on that team is to nurture, encourage, uplift, and bear one anther's burdens, to emulate the Savior. When we are offering that relief to others we become a member of a different team, the “Angels” team as we partner up with angels from the other side, just like we saw in the clip from from the “Angels in the Outfield” movie.

How do we know who needs our help? We follow the example of the young boy in the movie and pray for help. Sister Beck challenged us to pray for the gift to be “quick to observe”. If we are sincere in our request – the Lord will let us know what to do. In our Visiting Teaching conference today we really didn't talk about visiting teaching because the heart and soul of visiting teaching is charity. Look at our team scoreboard – our stats are high. The sisters in our ward are doing an amazing job of fulfilling their roles as visiting teachers and as a result our ward is blessed. One of the purposes of the this conference is to motivate us to do even better. Statistics give us a good guideline as to how we are doing but they don’t really tell us if we are truly ministering to our sisters.

Sister Beck gave us a story of 2 sisters who faithfully did their V.T. early every month. They made their appointments early in the month and even prayed before they went out. One time they went to visit a sister whose husband was ill. As they visited the baby was crying downstairs and the husband was unable to help. Amidst all the commotion they shared a well prepared message. Then as they left they said, “if there is anything we can do to help let us know” as they left behind a kitchen full of dirty dishes and a sister who was feeling a little overwhelmed. They completely missed the point of the visit – they weren’t quick to observe. It was easier to leave their sister in the outfield than to help her.

Let’s make sure as we visit teach we are not just filling a statistic. Let’s be aware our sisters in Relief Society who are struggling. Let’s step up our efforts to help them, remember them as we visit teach them, and pray for them individually in our prayers. If we see someone sitting by themselves let’s get up and go sit by them or invite them to sit by us. If there’s not seat let’s at least acknowledge them, touch them on shoulder, smile at them, and talk to them. Let’s look for anyone new or visiting and shake their hand as we introduce our self. Let’s invite them over for dinner or family night or a walk. Let’s call them to see if they want a ride to enrichment or church.

Let’s take a different approach to planning our month. Instead of allowing the busy-ness of life decide for us when we can fit in our visiting teaching, fellowshipping, service, and friendshipping, let’s schedule first those things that are important. We will find we still have time to take care of all the small things that seem to consume our time.

As we visit teach we are "earthly" angels. As we extend ourselves, even if it’s hard, and personally reach out to our sisters, Joseph Smith promised us that: "angels cannot be restrain’d from being our associates"…. ”they will be round about us to bear us up”. D&C 84:88 By Linn Evans

August Cooking Club-Fresh Fruits & Veggies

On August 13th Pam Henderson hosted our monthly Cooking Club. We were very fortunate to have a Lisette Marcotte of Farmer Fresh To You as a guest speaker. She shared her vast knowledge of produce with us and now we're going to share it with you.

As part of the fun evening we each entered our name for a drawing of a Small Box of fresh veggies & fruit that Lisette brought from her business. Linn was the lucky winner!

Watermelon: Did you know that the best way to tell if your watermelon is ripe is to feel the outside of it for ribbing. A ripe watermelon should feel "ribbed".

Small melons: they need to smell fresh and sweet. They should have some "give" to them to be ripe. Cantaloupe should have some "give" at the end where it has been cut from the vine. Ogen melons are a great melon. Try one!

Corn on the cob: Should be eaten within 2-3 days of being purchased. If you are not going to eat your corn right away, pull the silks out and store in your refrigerator. Keep the husks on. Pulling the silks prevents the mold from growing.

Carrots: Purchase with heads on so that you know they are fresh. Then cut the tops off before storing as the tops will pull all the nutrients out of the carrot. Yellow carrots are sweeter than orange.

Tomatoes: Never store in the fridge. Refrigerating causes the membranes to break down and they lose their flavor.

Peppers: All bell peppers start off green. Yellow tend to be a little sweeter than the green and red even sweeter than the yellow.

Cauliflower: Did you know that orange cauliflower has a nuttier and sweeter flavor than the white?

Apples: Don't store apples with any other fruit as they give off ethylene which accelerates ripening.

Fresh Herbs: VERY high in antioxidants. The flavor of fresh herbs is amazing. When cooking with fresh herbs, add them to the END of your cooking.

Garlic: Garlic has HUGE health benefits. It enhances your immune system, healthy heart, blood circulation, antioxidants, digestion, cuts cholesterol, and benefits your skin. It also has healing properties and contains allicin which is an antibiotic. Several women shared their success with using garlic and warm olive oil inserted into the ear for ear infections.

Onions: Spring onions are very good, they have a strong and sweet flavor. You can interchange chives, leeks, green onions, spring onions as they are all onions. Did you know that shallots are a combination of garlic and onion? You can cut off the bottom of a leek and replant in soil and it will regrow. You can also do the same with garlic as it is a bulb.

Turmeric: Best seasoning for everything. Huge health benefits: Anti-cancer, helps with memory loss, antioxidant, anti-diabetes, fatigue, anti-inflammatory, and many, many more uses.

Honey: Best to use honey that is locally grown because its produced by bees in your local environment. Because bees consume foods in your area they have immune stimulating properties that help you to better adapt to your environment.

It was the culmination of the Primary Scripture Camp which had the theme of

"Building My Eternal Family"

Cam 2 combined with Cam 1 for a great event.

The little children felt the Spirit as they walked the grounds.

The children were brought into the foyer of the Temple and sat down as they listened to Bishop Hales and President Murphy. They learned a little more about how special the

"Online role-playing games may be more than a way to pass the time. For some, they can become addictive, leading to lost spirituality, lost opportunities, and lost relationships.

Two weeks ago, Jason* quit the high school track team because the meets and practice times conflicted with his online “guild quests” and “raids.” The trumpet he used to love to play now sits in the corner of his bedroom collecting dust. Instead of being at track practice or band rehearsals, Jason spends his free time playing an online computer game. He often stays up so late at night playing his game that he has begun to sleep through early-morning seminary.

Or consider Michael, at his typical spot after midnight: in front of the computer, headset on, playing an online adventure game with his “friends,” none of whom he has actually met. When his wife, Jenny, gently reminds him, “It’s late, and we haven’t read our scriptures or prayed together,” he replies, “I can’t come right now. We’re right in the middle of a raid, and my guild needs me.”

Then there’s Sara, who discovered online gaming** about a year ago. She was a top salesperson in her department, winning prizes and earning bonuses for outstanding performance. Online gaming, however, has negatively affected her work. She now plays most evenings and weekends, and she has stopped attending singles activities in her stake to make more time for gaming. She often leaves church early so she can continue her online adventures.

Jason, Michael, and Sara are representative of the growing number of people who demonstrate compulsive behavior in playing massive multiplayer online role-playing games (or MMORPGs). In these games, social networking meets virtual computer fantasy to bring players into exciting, collaborative quests. Tens of millions of players are active worldwide, with new players joining every month. The growth of the activity shows that an increasing number of men and women enjoy MMORPGs as a relaxing, recreational activity. But some people (like Jason, Michael, and Sara) are letting recreational, virtual life interfere with their actual lives.

Although many online gamers do not become addicted or even compulsive players, prophetic warnings about the use of our time in this mortal life indicate that online gaming is an activity that warrants caution. Of course, MMORPGs are not the only form of recreation that have the potential to cause problems. There are many activities that can become so absorbing that they rob participants of spiritual, intellectual, and social development. We hope that the explanations, suggestions, and prophetic counsel included in this article may be helpful to individuals and families as they seek the guidance of the Spirit in finding balance in their lives. "

Steak Rub Recipes

Outback Steak Rub
5 min prep time serves 10
4 t salt
4 t paprika
2 t ground black pepper
1 t onion powder
1 t garlic powder
1 t ground red pepper
1/2 t coriander
1/2 t turmeric

Mix, sprinkle lightly on your favorite cut of beef, then cook as desired.

Savory Steak Rub
3 min prep time serves 5
1 T dried marjoram
1 T dried basil
1 T garlic powder
2 t dried thyme
1 t dried rosemary, crushed
3/4 t dried oregano
1/2 t onion powder
Combine all ingredients. Rub over steaks before grilling or broiling.

Pam's KILLER BBQ Sauce
1/2 C wine vinegar
1/4 C Worcestershire Sauce
1/2 C water
1 1/2 C brown sugar
1 1/2 C Ketchup
1 t salt
1 t fresh ground pepper
2 1/2 T dry mustard
2 t smoked paprika
1 t or to taste Chipotle Chile powder
Mix well.

Pam's Pork Rib Rub
1 T brown sugar
1 1/2 t smoked paprika
1 t garlic salt
1/2 t dry mustard
1/4 t cayenne pepper
Mix all together and rub on ribs before baking.

Nancy & June enjoyed the treats. Nancy shared with us her family 4th of July tradition of homemade ice cream and
homemade root beer.
Sherry enjoys every bite! Janet shared her recipe for homemade Strawberry and Rocky Road Ice Creams. They were DELICIOUS!
Kristy's favorite was the Strawberry Gelato. Melissa and Mel loved the Vanilla Ice Cream.

Pam's Vanilla Ice Cream
makes 4 qts
2 C milk
1 3/4 C sugar
1/2 t salt
2 C half & half
1 T vanilla
4 C whipping cream

Scald milk until bubbles form around edge. Remove from heat. Add sugar and salt. Stir until dissolved. Stir in the rest of ingredients. Chill for 30 minutes. Freeze in Ice Cream maker.
Variations:
Fruit: 4 C pureed strawberries or peaches or 2 C strawberry jam. Add before freezing.
Oreo: Crush 2-4 cups of Oreos into desired chunkiness (will break up finer while processing) Add during the last 15 minutes of freezing.
Vanilla Bean: Put 1 entire bean in sugar mixture, seal and leave for 1 day. Take out bean, split and scrape out seed. Put both pod and seeds in mixture before chilling. Process as indicated.

Pam's Fresh Strawberry Gelato
3/4 C sugar
1 T cornstarch
1 C whole milk
3/4 C whipping cream
2 1/2 c sliced strawberries
2 T pomegranate juice or grenadine

Stir sugar and cornstarch in heavy medium saucepan. Whisk in milk and cream. Whisk over medium heat until gelato base thickens and begins to bubble, about 5 minutes. Pour into bowl and cool over ice, stirring occasionally. Puree strawberries. Strain (optional) into cooled gelato base. Stir in pomegranate juice. Chill 3 hours. Process in ice cream maker.

Janet's Kansas City Vanilla Ice Cream
(A family favorite of the Taos & Jenkins)

3 T cornstarch
6 C milk
2 2/3 C sugar
4 large or 5 small eggs
3/4 t salt
1 13 oz can evaporated milk
1 pt whipping cream
3 1/2 T vanilla

Mix cornstarch with 1/2 c milk until smooth. Add 1 1/2 c milk & cook in double boiler until thick and smooth. Beat constantly to avoid lumps. Beat sugar, eggs, salt & evaporated milk with electric mixer. Add hot cornstarch mixture and beat well. Add whipping cream, remaining 4 c milk & vanilla. Pour into gallon electric or hand crank type freezer. Pack with ice and rock salt and freeze according to manufacturer's directions. Makes 1 gallon.
Variation to Berry Ice Cream:
Add 2 C crushed fresh raspberries or blueberries and omit vanilla. It may be necessary to increase the amount of sugar slightly.

Janet's Rocky Road Ice Cream

1/3 c unsweetened cocoa

1 C sugar

2 C milk

1 t vanilla

1/2 C chopped almonds or pecans

1/8 t salt

2 C whipping cream

1 (1 oz) square semi sweet chocolate

1 C mini marshmallows

In large sauce pan mix cocoa and sugar. Gradually add milk. Stir over low heat until cocoa and sugar dissolve. Cool to room temperature. Stir in vanilla, salt & whipping cream. Set aside. Shred chocolate with coarse grater. Stir chocolate, marshmallows and nuts into cocoa mix. Pour into freezer canister. Freeze. Stir marshmallows evenly throughout frozen mixture before serving or ripening. Makes 2 qts.

2 Eagle Projects

Josh Morris designed and built 5 Bat Boxes. Camarillo has a shortage of housing for bats. Bats are very helpful in controlling the insect population in our area. To accommodate the local bats in our area the Bat Houses had to be built to special specifications. Then they had to be painted black to retain the heat from the day through the night.

After the Bat Houses were built, they needed to be installed at the Pleasant Valley Historical Museum Gardens. Looks like hard work!

With a little help from Bro. Barton the Bat Houses are mounted to the poles. The poles have to be a certain height from the ground and set in concrete.

Robert's Project was at Monte Vista Middle School. They added a 2 benches and four trees to the quad. It looks so great now and will be there for many generations.

Awesome Red Bench-Monte Vista's colors are RED and Black! The boys dug out the dirt and set the bench in concrete.

The quad looks really great with the addition of the 4 trees and 2 benches.

The center of the quad is of tile and makes a great place for the students to gather.

This drill works a little faster and easier than the old fashioned shovel!

The dirt was so compacted-it was like concrete! They had to get the big-guns out! Thank goodness Robert knows someone who can rent those kind of tools!

Keep digging!!!!!

Gardening Class at Stevenson's

We had another informative Gardening Class. Linda showed us the proper way to prune roses. She also gave us some valuable tips on keeping Hydrangeas.
Chuck explained the importance of trimming off your dead flowers to promote continuous blooming.

The best of the evening was these biodegradable pots. They are made of newspaper and are excellent starter containers for your veggies.

Here you see the finished product. Notice the wood "knob" in the back of the photo. Chuck made a couple of these and gave them as "door prizes". These are used to make the paper containers. They're called "Wooden Pot Makers".

Follow the instructions below to make the biodegradable containers.

Chuck shows how the wood pot makers come apart. There is a top and a bottom.

Roll the newspaper around the post snugly. Let about 2 inches of newspaper extend below the wood post.

Continue rolling until the entire length of newspaper is used.

Fold the bottom of the newspaper in toward the center and place the bottom wood post under bottom of newspaper. Apply a lot of pressure.

Remove wood pieces and you have your very own biodegradable starter container!

Here is a view of the inside of the pot. Don't have a wooden pot maker??? No worries---you can use an aluminum soda can or a 15 oz tomato can. You can also purchase them on-line for approximately $15.00. Or, you might barter with our wonderful Bro Stevenson---a pot maker for a fresh baked loaf of bread or jar of homemade jam!

Cameron Gaisford, Proprietor of the Oxnard Outback Steakhouse, was our guest speaker for the June Cooking Class. Here he is with mom, Bonnie
He came with all his gear, tons of food, and vast knowledge of grilling to share with us tips and information on choosing the best cut of beef, what are the choices in cuts of meat, rubs and seasonings, tips for grill prep and best of all...how to bake the perfect potato.

How to make the Perfect Baked Potato: Wash potato and dry. Rub in margarine and then roll in Kosher salt. Place into a preheated oven at 350 degrees. Bake for 1 hour. Do not wrap in foil, do not poke with fork. Excellent every time! Cameron did an outstanding job of teaching us tips and tricks to make our BBQ meals even better.

He brought delicious appetisers, incredible baked potatoes and even steaks for us to sample and enjoy.

Sear your meat to seal in the juices. Approximately 3-5 minutes per side.

Your grill should be 450-500.

Test your meat with a meat thermometer for denseness.

For Rare beef: 140 degrees,

Medium Rare: 145-150,

Medium: 155-160,

Medium Well: 165,

Well: 170-180.

Cameron took quite a bit of time explaining the different cuts of beef commonly used in grilling and the benefits of each cut.

The Rib Eye is the best "All Around" steak. They can also be purchased bone in.

The Fillet is the best for tenderness. It is cut from the "non-working" part of the cow so that it is more tender.

The T-Bone is like 2 steaks in one; flavorful strip and fillet tenderloin. It is cut from the middle section of the short loin.

Porterhouse Steak is similar to the T-Bone. It is cut from the rear end of the short loin and has larger cuts of the strip and tenderloin.

3 Tips for your grill: Clean, well oiled and very hot. Cameron uses BUTTER!!! He also used a variety of seasonings made from combinations of spices we all use everyday. Picking the right "Grade" of beef is very important. Try to use "USDA Choice" for better flavor, less grisel and less fat. Some fat is wanted for flavor-some marbling is good, but too much fat is just that-too much fat. Remember that you are paying "by the pound" whether that's a pound of fat or a pound of meat.

Guardian Angels-Protecting our Families by Bonnie

A guardian angel is an angel thought of as watching over a particular person, a defender of that person. In the Bible dictionary and the topical guides there are no references to guardian angels. Elder John A. Widtsoe stated that there is no evidence that every person is assigned a guardian angel, one who would give each of us special help. “In fact, the constant presence of the Holy Spirit would seem to make such a constant, angelic companionship unnecessary.”
We, as mothers, think of ourselves as the guardians of our homes not unlike those mothers of the stripling warriors who taught their sons to “. . . keep the commandments of God and to walk uprightly before him” [Alma 53:22] Their mothers taught them “. . .that if they did not doubt, God would deliver them . . . [they did] not doubt that [their] mothers knew it.” [Alma 56:47-48]
Out children need protection daily from drugs, pornography, foul language, music that does not uplift, movies that do not invite the spirit, violence. How do we arm our children to successfully face the world they go outside our homes. Are we teaching our children Celestial principles? Are we following the counsel that we have received from Prophets of the Lord? Do we implement the programs given to us from the Prophets, say, for example, do we hold weekly Family Home Evening? Why was this program been given to us?
“If the Saints obey this counsel [to hold regular family home evenings], we promise that great blessings will result. Love at home and obedience to parents will increase. Faith will be developed in the hearts of the youth of Israel, and they will gain power to combat the evil influence and temptations with beset them.” [Joseph F. Smith, Anthon H. Lund, Charles W. Penrose, First Presidency letter, 27 April 1915]
Why do we struggle in implementing this program if the purpose of holding FHE is to help us protect and guard our families? Young children have short attention span.Teenagers are busy, they might have attitudes, or be rebellious. Then families with a range of ages of children– how do you teach to reach one age without losing the other? And what about single adults, couples or empty-nesters– is it necessary for them to hold family home evening? The answer is a resounding YES because we all grow closer to the spirit if we will follow the guidance of the Prophets.
Elder Bruce R. McConkie (The Probationary Test of Mortality, University of Utah, Jan. 10, 1992) stated that “. . . everyone in the Church who is on the straight and narrow path, who is striving and struggling and desiring to do what is right, though is far from perfection in this life; if you’re on that path and pressing forward and you die, you’ll never get off that path. There is no such thing as falling off the straight and narrow path in the life to come and the reason is that this life is the time that is given to men to prepare for eternity. If you are on that path when death comes . . . you’ll never fall off from it, for all practical purposes your calling and election is made sure.”
Family home evening doesn’t have to be complicated. A basic family home evening format would be (1) prayer, (2) song, (3) scripture, (4) lesson, (5) prayer When you have young families, it could take 5 minutes to cover everything. Using this format, we teach gospel principles to all different ages of children. I know we are all busy but is this program too difficult for us to follow?
And where do we get ideas for lessons? We have resources to help us from scripture story books and videos to LDS.org. You can even google “family home evening” to get creative ideas that work from other families who have tried them. Have you ever thought of taking a hymn and making that the basis for a family home evening lesson? If your family is struggling to hold family home evening why not combine with another family, or share ideas with someone who has had the same struggles.
If we will have faith, and rely on the spirit, the Lord will assist us to hold family home evening. Hasn’t the Lord told us “. . . for I will go before your face. I will be on your right hand and on your left . . . my Spirit shall be in your hearts, and mine angels round about you, to bear you up.” (D&C 84:88 )
Will we be among those who knew? Will we be mothers who prepare our children to face the world fully protected?Will we be the guardian angels of our homes?
Lets all work together and help each other to succeed.

Beecroft 5K Memorial Run

Monday was the Beecroft 5K Memorial Run in Ojai.

Many of the participants of the race were good friends and members of our ward. Janet took 1st place in her division!

All smiles BEFORE the race.

It's a great family race. Several of the children rode their bikes or hit the trail with their scooters. Many of the moms took to the path with their jogging strollers.
Scott & Kristy ran with their boys. Ethan & Drew ran with Scott while Kristy tried to keep up with Will as he rode his bike.

Lauri took 2nd in her division. Ed came in 6th in his age division!

Who are these cute mommas??? Bonnie placed 8th in her division and Debbie placed 4th in her division.

Oh, to be 9 again! Running like a gazelle!

Ethan & Drew came in not far behind their dad.

Marita came in 4th in her division! Their were 14 women in her division.

Kirsten has been training for this race and it really paid off. She quickly pulled ahead of the mass of runners to finish 5th in her division.

Look at those kids pull ahead at the start of the race! Addie was determined to finish before any of her cousins! Addie finished 4th in her division and Audrey finished 1st in hers! I think I see Tyler back there along with Ed, Bonnie & Jonathon.

RS/YW Progressive Dinner & Bike Ride

Our RS/YW Progressive Dinner and Bike Ride was a huge success. We all had such a great time.

We started off at the park and then rode to Karen's for fruit and water. Here we had a little "Apron String Cutting" for our Laurels and their moms. Time to cut those strings, Moms! Nancy did a wonderful job spotlighting our out-going Laurels. Then Linn took a minute to give some advice to the new young women coming into Relief Society.

After a wonderful dinner of salad, chips & salsa and pulled pork sandwiches we all rode back up to the park for fun and games.
We had a few sisters who go a little carried away! Kathy, Roberta and June are HIGHLY competitive! Who knew?

Beecroft 5K Memorial Run

The Beecroft 5K Memorial Day Run got started when dad (Carl J Beecroft, Jr.) was Stake President of Ventura Stake from 1978-1988. One of his counselors was a big runner, Dr. Robert Skankey from Ojai. My dad always wanted to run a marathon... he was very athletic most of his life and enjoyed running, tennis, softball and golf, but never got to do a marathon as his Ataxia Disease started to have its affect in his early '50s.

But in 1981 they had the first Stake 5K Run held at different venues, the first ones were at the Ventura County Government Center, Ventura State Beach up to Surfers Point and back and the last number of years it has been held starting at Foster Park on the way up to Ojai off Highway 33.
Back in those early days, my dad also had an interest in Beekeeping, as did my husband John. Dad would bottle up some of his honey and put labels on them for the 1st place prizes in the different age categories. The race began to be called the "Beecroft 5K Run" and the honey seemed an appropriate prize because of his last name..."Bee" croft. The Stake kept records of everyone's times and gave out certificates in the early years. It is highly organized and run by a married couple in Ventura Stake each year who are avid runners themselves. The race has always accommodated members of the Stake of every age, gender, shape and size! They even have a stroller category and walkers category. It makes it a lot of fun to bring the whole family to. Today the 1st place price in each category is still a bottle of honey and 2nd and 3rd place prizes are awarded "bit-o-honey" candies. My dad died of cancer in February 2004 at the young age of 67. My mom followed him at the end of 2007. This year marks the 28th year of the Beecroft 5K Memorial Day Run.

My siblings and I are having our first Beecroft Family Reunion without our parents with the Run as the main event of our reunion this year. My parents would be so humbled to know that this race continues to happen after all these years. Bro. Robert Skankey, who came up with the idea all those years ago, still comes to the race and much credit goes to him for seeing that it has been such a success. Some participants have been coming all these 28 years! It's become quite the tradition.

The race is free to participate in and the sign-in and registration tables begin around 8:00 am and the race starts at 9:00 am. There is a parking fee to park in Foster Park. Some people choose to park outside the park and walk into the gathering place down by the restrooms. We hope you will come out on Monday and join us!

Sister Amanda Ah Sue Serving In Boise,Idaho

Sister Amanda Ah Sue was born in Orlando, Florida July 1986. Her family moved back to Camarillo in 1988. Her mom, Linda Ketels grew up here in Camarillo, as well. Amanda graduated in December 2008 from BYU with a Bachelors in Philosophy. She surprised her family at Christmas time by telling them she had decided to serve a mission. Originally, she had wanted to wait until her brother, Chris, had returned home from his mission to Texas. He will return home June 3rd. But, at his urging, she sent in her mission papers. She received her call in February to serve in the Boise, Idaho Mission. She left for the MTC on April 15th and then for Boise on May 5th.

Amanda loves her mission. Her companion and she get along very well. They are living with an "empty nest" couple in their basement. Her first experience with her first door approach went really well. Although Amanda did not have any training on door approaches, she was able to deliver the message and even was invited in to teach a lesson. She and her companion are able to go to the Temple once a week on their Preparation Day. She and her Companion have use of a car which they are grateful for.

Heaven Sent ( Recognizing the Tender Mercies of the Lord) Lesson Given by Linn Evans, RS Presidnet

In the opening chapter of the Book of Mormon, Nephi tells us one of the reasons that he is writing this record is to show us “that the tender mercies of the Lord are over all those whom he hath chosen, because of their faith.” Nephi 1:20
1000 years later Moroni pleads with us to: “remember how merciful the Lord hath been unto the children of men” Moroni 10:3

Elder Bednar tells us that the “Lord’s tender mercies are the very personal and individualized blessings” that come from the Lord. They are little everyday miracles that come to us when we need them the most and remind us of how involved both the Savior and Heavenly Father are in our lives. How many times do we overlook them and think that they are just random coincidences? It’s the Lord's timing that allows us to recognize them as blessings and not coincidences.

When we recognize the Lord’s tender mercies in our own lives, we realize that He knows the challenges that we face and knows what will help us get through them. May we strive to remain close to Him - so we will qualify ourselves for His personal and individualized blessings and when we receive them remember to acknowledge them with gratitude to Him.

"Thoreau's Cove" c.1990
In our search to obtain relief from stresses of life, may we earnestly seek ways to simplify our lives.

In an effort to separate himself from worldliness, Henry David Thoreau lived 2 years at Walden Pond in a life of simplicity. Elder Perry also went to Walden Pond to spend time in reflection and peace, helping to balance the stressful events of his life.

Thoreau determined that there were only 4 things that a man really needed: food, clothing, shelter and fuel.

Food: As members of the church, we possess sacred knowledge from revealed truth about the relationship between the body and the spirit. D&C 88:15: "The spirit and the body are the soul of man." We have the word of wisdom to give us simplicity in the food choices that we make. By living by these guidelines we will avoid the stresses of addictions, poor health and bad habits.

Clothing: A simplified life that brings spiritual blessing requires the wearing of simple and modest clothing. Our dress and grooming send a message to others about who we are and also effect the way we act.

Shelter: We have been encouraged in almost every General Conference of the Church to not live beyond our means. Our income should determine the kind of housing we can afford, not the neighbor's big home across the street.

Fuel: Spiritual fuel. We must acquire knowledge of God's eternal plan and our role in it, and then by living righteously, surrendering our will to the will of the Lord, we receive the promised blessings. Elder William R. Bradford taught: "In righteousness there is great simplicity. In every case that confronts us in life there is either a right way or a wrong way to proceed. If we choose the right way, we are sustained in our actions b the principles of righteousness, in the which there is power from the heavens. if we choose the wrong way and act on that choice, there is no such heavenly promise or power and we are alone and are destined to fail".

Just before Thoreau died, he was asked if he had made peace with God. He replied, "I was not aware we had ever quarreled."

May we earnestly seek ways to simplify our lives!

Cooking Club~MIXES~April 9th~~~

We had a great turn out at our MIXES cooking club. Unfortunately, we don't have any photos to share with you BUT we do have some AMAZING recipes for you!

Pamcakes
2 1/2 c Biscuit mix
1T sugar
1 egg, beaten
1 1/2 c buttermilk, water or milk

Biscuit Mix
8 1/2 c flour
1 T baking powder
1 T salt
2 t cream of tartar
1 t baking soda
1 1/2 instant non-fat dry milk
2 1/4 c shortening
Sift together all dry ingredients. Blend well. With pastry blender, cut in shortening until mixed well. Will look like cornmeal in texture when completely mixed. Use like typical Biscuit mix. To make biscuits, use 3c mix to 3/4c milk or water.

Roll Mix
10 c flour
2/3 c sugar
2 t salt
1/2 c instant nonfat dry milk
Combine all ingredients in a large bowl. Mix well. Store in large airtight container. Use within 6-8 months.

Make the following recipes with the above Roll Mix recipe:
Pan Rolls
1 T yeast
1 1/2 c warm water
2 eggs, beaten
1/2 c melted butter
5-6 c roll mix (above)
Put roll mix in breadmaker, form well in center of mixture. Add yeast. pour over water, butter and eggs. Set on "dough" setting and process. Grease 13/9 or 2 9-inch round pans. Punch down dough. Form dough into desired size/shape, barely touching. Let rise until doubled. Bake at 350 until lightly brown, about 15 minutes.

Swedish Twists
1 pkg yeast
1 c buttermilk
1/4 t baking soda
1/2 c melted butter
2 eggs
4 1/2 c roll mix (above)
3 T softened butter
1/2 c brown sugar, packed
1 t cinnamon
Put buttermilk in pan and bring to boil-buttermilk will curdle. Add baking soda, melted butter and eggs. Mix well. Put roll mix in breadmaker. Make well in center of mixture; add yeast. Pour over buttermilk mixture (make sure it has cooled to room temp). process on "dough" setting. When finished, punch down dough. Roll out into 12/20 rectangle. Spread over 3 T softened butter over 1/2 the length. Mix together brown sugar and cinnamon and sprinkle over butter. Fold half dough over cinnamon, so that rolls are 12x10. With a pizza cutter, cut the folded lengths into desired strips. I do 18 3/4 inch slices and cut them in half for shorter, smaller pastries. You can do them about 1 inch, and keep them long for 12 very large pastries. Let them rise until doubled, about 30 minutes. Bake at 350 for 10-15 minutes, until golden brown. Make glaze while baking: 1 1/2 c powdered sugar, 1 T softened butter, 2 T hot water. Mix together, frost while rolls are still warm.

Onion Rolls
1 c boiling water
1/2 pkg dry onion soup mix
1 egg, beaten
1 T yeast
2 T vegetable oil
3 1/2 c roll mix (above)
melted butter
Pour water over soup mix, stir to completely dissolve and let cool to room temp. Put roll mix into breadmaker. Make well in center of dry mixture and put yeast in well. Mix egg and oil with soup mixture and pour over dry ingredients in breadmaker. Set breadmaker to "dough" and process. When done, punch down dough and form into desired size balls. (Dough will double). Place balls on greased cookie sheet. Let balls raise to about double, about 30 minutes. Bake at 350 for 10 minutes or until lightly browned. Brush tops with melted butter.

Beef Pastries
3/4 lb. ground beef
1 c chopped onion
1 c shredded cabbage
1 t garlic salt
1/4 t msg
2 c biscuit mix (above)
1/2 c milk
1 c of shredded cheese; mozzarella or cheddar
1/4 c melted butter, margarine or oil.
Brown ground beef; drain fat. Add onion and garlic salt. Cook until onions slightly soft. Add cabbage and cook until wilted. Ass msg and stir until completely incorporated. In separate bowl, stir together biscuit mix and milk. Knead about 15 minutes. Divide dough into 8-10 small balls. Roll out each ball to about 5 inches round. Put a spoonful of meat mixture in center of dough, sprinkle with cheese. Fold over top and crimp edge with fork. Brush top with melted butter. Bake 425 for 10-20 minutes, until golden brown.

Taco Seasoning Mix
2 t dry minced onion
1 t garlic salt
1 t chili powder or chipotle chili powder
1/2 t cornstarch
1/2 t crushed dried red pepper (omit if you don't like spicy seasoning)
1/4 t dried oregano
1/2 t ground cumin
Store in zippered bag or square of foil. Use within 6 months.

To make Taco Filling:
1 lb. lean ground beef
1/2 c water
1 pkg. taco seasoning mix.
Brown ground beef; drain grease. Add water and seasoning mix. Reduce heat and simmer 10 minutes, stiring occasionally.

Sloppy Joes
1 lb lean ground beef
1/2 c chopped onion
1/4 c brown sugar
2 T vinegar
1/2 t chili powder
1/2 c ketchup
1/4 t dry mustard
1 t Worcestershire sauce
dash of red pepper
Brown ground beef with onion; drain grease. Add remaining ingredients, stir until heated through, about 10 minutes. Serve over hamburger buns or onion rolls (recipe above).

Lesson #31 by Lauri "God Shall Be with You Forever and Ever" Liberty Jail

Every one of us, in one way or another, great or small, dramatic or incidental, is going to spend a little time in Liberty Jail – spiritually speaking. We will face things we do not want to face for reasons that may not have been our fault. Indeed, we may face difficult circumstances for reasons that were absolutely right and proper, reasons that came because we were trying to keep the commandments of the Lord. The lessons of the winter of 1838-39 teach us that every experience can become a redemptive experience if we remain bonded to our Father in Heaven through that difficulty.

Lesson #1 Everyone Faces Trying Times
We must not succumb to the fear that God has abandoned us or that He does not hear our prayers. He does hear us. He does see us. He does love us. Sisters, we must keep knocking at the door. Keep pleading. Know that God hears your cries and knows your distress. He is your Father, and you are His child.
Even though seemingly unjust circumstances may be heaped upon us and even though unkind and unmerited things may be done to us – perhaps by those we consider enemies but also, in some cases, by those whom we thought were friends – nevertheless, through it all, God is with us.

Lesson #2 Even the Worthy Will Suffer
We need to realize that just because difficult things happen – sometimes unfair and seemingly unjustified things – it does not mean that we are unrighteous or that we are unworthy of blessings or that God is disappointed in us. Of course, sinfulness does bring suffering, and the only answer to that behavior is repentance. But sometimes suffering comes to the righteous, too.
If you are having a bad day, you’ve got a lot of company – very, very good company. The best company that has ever lived.
We don’t have to look for sorrow. We don’t have to seek to be martyrs. Trouble has a way of finding us even without our looking for it. But when it is obvious that a little time in Liberty Jail waits for you (spiritually speaking), remember God has not forgotten you and the Savior has been where you have been, allowing Him to provide for your deliverance and comfort.

Lesson #3 Remain Calm, Patient, Charitable, and Forgiving
In the midst of such distress and difficulty they could remain calm and patient, charitable and forgiving. They remembered their covenants, they disciplined themselves, and they knew that we must live the gospel at all times, not just when it is convenient and not just when things are going well. The real test of our faith and our Christian discipleship is when things are NOT going smoothly. That is when we get to see what we’re made of and how strong our commitment to the gospel really is.
The Spirit has a near-impossible task to get through to a heart that is filled with hate or anger or vengeance or self-pity. On the other hand, the Spirit finds instant access to a heart striving to be charitable and forgiving, long-suffering and kind – principles of true discipleship.

Lesson #4 Do All Things Cheerfully
“Let us cheerfully do all things that lie in our power; and then may we stand still, with the utmost assurance, to see the salvation of God, and for his arm to be revealed” (D&C 123:17).
What a tremendously optimistic and faithful concluding declaration to be issued from a prison-temple! What a magnificent attitude to maintain in good times or bad, in sorrow or in joy!

Cinemagic 2009 "California Dreamin"

Each year the Pleasant Valley Education Foundation sponsors programs in the Arts and Technology. Cinemagic is one of these events. It is a great opportunity for youth to grow through the Arts. The children are not only involved in the production as actors, they run the backstage crew, lights, props, make-up, microphones, help with sound and choreography.

This year the theme of Cinemagic was "California Dreamin". And some of the STARS were:
Micah Hager, Avery Hager, Beth Arbon, Paige Malan and Brie Morris

Bradlee was the Manager of the Stage Crew

Avery and Beth stared in Route 66 and Jellicle Cats, Beth was also a "Laugh In" Speaker. Micah stared in On My Way, Horray For Hollywood and Get'cha Head In the Game. Paige stared in In the Jungle and Reach Out and Touch, Brie stared in Zoot Suit and Disney. Debbie Hager has been sewing costumes for Cinemagic since November. She was the Costume Chair. We are so fortunate to have so many talented members in our ward who contribute to our community!

Zion can be considered to ways: Zion as a place (physical gathering), and Zion as a people (spiritual gathering).
Zion is the state of perfection that we should all be trying to obtain, both as a stake and as a person.
The opposite of Zion is Babylon, the ancient city that worshipped the false idol Bael or Bel, which translated means "the Shame", due to the sexual perversions practiced by those worshipping Bael.
D & C 133:5-9
We are living in a chosen day, which Nephi saw: 1 Nephi 14:12-14. Being a Zion people protects us from the travails of the world.
Bruce R. McConkie tells us that we are no longer called to congregate in the same location, that stage of Pioneering is past, but that we are to create stakes of Zion where we live now. These stakes will give us refuge from the world, D & C 115:5-6.
Elder Christopherson tells us that there are 3 ways to "Come Unto Zion"
Unity
Holiness
Caring for the poor
WE CANNOT WAIT UNTIL ZION COMES FOR THESE THINGS TO HAPPEN--ZION WILL COME ONLY AS THEY HAPPEN.
Unity--we must overcome jarrings, contentions, envyings, and strife. We also must forgive. Those estranged from the church need to come back. We need to not hold grudges.
Holiness--The Saviour was critical of some of the early Saints for their "lustful...desires" D & C 101:6. These were people we lived in a non-television, non-film, non-Internet, non-iPod world. We must leave immodesty and vulgarity aside and seek for a celestial life.
Caring for the poor--Throughout history, the Lord has measure societies and individuals by how well they cared for the poor. We are admonished to be generous in our fast offerings and giving to the poor. One comment made in Relief Society was that in a Ward affected by poverty, job-losses and other serious financial troubles, the leadership of the ward noticed that the Tithing amounts were significantly smaller (due to loss of income), but that Fast Offerings were greatly increased! Let us strive to be a holier people!

Recipes From Our RS Enrichment St. Paddies Dinner

Corned Beef-by Nancy Hales (verbatim)
"It is one of my more complicated recipes as I so enjoy spending long hours over a hot stove preparing elaborate food for my appreciative family - - - the ones who, as toddlers, spurned my best culinary efforts in favor of clawing under the fridge for morsels kicked under there months earlier. (this was the original "Hales Granola") So throw an over-priced slab of corned beef into a big pot of simmering water and let it continue to simmer all day. 30 minutes before serving, throw in some cut up cabbage & continue to simmer until you can easily poke the cabbage with a fork. Preferably a clean fork, but any fork will do. Actually, my family really does like this incredibly simple meal. And I like the incredibly simple clean-up of ONE pot. Seriously, I use a very big pot, 1/2 to 3/4 full of simmering water (don't boil or it will be tough) and simmer it all day (8 hours or so). At the end, I sometimes take OUT the meat (sometimes not) turn up the heat and boil some carrots, then add some potatoes, then add the cabbage while continuing to cook. Carrots take the longest, etc. Serve with mustard and some really decadent dessert to make up for how easy the dinner was!! Oh, and killer homemade rolls. Either Roy's Rolls (made by the Bishop..) or if he's not available, then Rhodes frozen rolls!!! The end."

Roasted New Potatoes by Elaine Jensen

3 pounds small red new potatoes, halved
1/4 cup olive oil
1 teaspoon Salt and freshly ground black pepper (or seasoning salt)

DIRECTIONS
Heat oven to 375 degrees. Toss potatoes with oil, salt and pepper. Arrange, cut side down, on a large lipped cookie sheet or jellyroll pan.
Cover with foil, Roast until tender and golden brown, about 45 min. to 1 hr. Transfer to a serving
dish. Serves 8

Buttery Cooked Carrots-Elaine Jensen

2 pounds baby carrots
1/2 cup margarine
2/3 cup brown sugar (or less)

DIRECTIONS
Cook carrots in a large pot of boiling water until tender. Drain off most of the liquid, Set the carrots aside.
Melt margarine and brown sugar in pan with the small amount of liquid. Simmer and stir until the margarine melts. Return carrots to the pot, and toss to coat. Cover, and let sit for a few minutes to allow flavors to mingle. Serves 8

Irish Soda Bread-Debbie Morris
Preheat oven to 350
Mix well with pastry blender:
2 cups flour
1 1/2 t baking powder
1/2 t baking soda
1/2 t salt
1 T sugar
Mix well then add:
1/4 c room temp butter
1/2 c raisins
2 t caraway seeds
Mix well then add:
1 beaten egg and 2/3 c buttermilk
Mix and knead briefly and place into a greased 8 inch round pan. Press down so that the dough fills the pan. Cut a bold cross over the top and sides. Brush top with 1 T milk.
Bake 35-40 minutes.

Irish Potato Candy-Debbie Morris
Ingredients
1/4 cup softened butter
1/2 8 oz. package cream cheese
1 t vanilla
4 cups confectioner's sugar
2 1/2 c flaked coconut
1 T cinnamon
1/2 T cocoa
Mix in medium bow, beat the butter and cream cheese together until smooth. Add the vanilla and confectioner's sugar. Beat until smooth. Using your hands mix the coconut. Roll into potato shapes and then roll into mixture of cocoa and cinnamon. Add pine nuts as if they were "eyes". Place on cookie sheet and chill.

This weeks lesson focused on being valiant in the cause of Christ. There are several ways we can do this. We are valiant in the cause of Christ when we do our best in the face of adversity and challenges. We also develop Christlike qualities, strive to improve ourselves, and endure to the end. Each class member was challenged to choose one Christlike attribute in which they felt they needed to improve, and made a goal to do so. Joseph Smith said, "I am a lover of the cause of Christ and of virtue, chastity, and an upright, steady course of conduct, and a holy walk."

Linda Tao is offering to teach classes on gardening at her home starting this Thursday at 6:30. These classes will be a 'hands-on' experience. These classes are open to both the RS Sisters and the Priesthood. (Bring your husband and maybe he will be motivated enough to rent a rototiller and turn over the soil in the garden for you!). Bring your neighbors and friends. She is extremely talented and has a great deal of experience. The following is a schedule of the gardening classes:

Sunday's Lesson: Living With Others In Peace and Harmony by Donna Maygren

One of the desires of the early Latter-day Saints was simply to be allowed to live their religion in peace. But wherever they moved, peace eluded them. Many agree that this might also be a concern in today’s world.
We can cultivate harmony in our communities by respecting the freedom of all people to believe according to their own conscience.

Articles of Faith 1:11: “We claim the privilege of worshiping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience, and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may.”

“We deem it a just principle, and it is one the force of which we believe ought to be duly considered by every individual, that all men are created equal, and that all have the privilege of thinking for themselves upon all matters relative to conscience. Consequently, then, we are not disposed, had we the power, to deprive any one of exercising that free independence of mind which heaven has so graciously bestowed upon the human family as one of its choicest gifts.”

Breads Cooking Class

Dilly Casserole Bread-Wendy Speakman
1 package dry yeast
1/4 cup lukewarm water
1 cup cottage cheese (heated to lukewarm)
2 T Sugar
1 T dry minced onion or 2 T finely chopped onion
1 T butter or margarine
2 t dill seed (dry)
1 t salt
1/4 t baking soda
1 unbeaten egg
2 1/4 to 2 1/2 c. flour
Soften yeast in water. Combine in mixing bowl cottage cheese, sugar, onion, butter, dill seed, salt, soda, egg, and softened yeast. Add flour to form a stiff dough, beating well after each addition. Cover. Let rise in warm place, until light and double in bulk (about 50 - 60 minutes). Stir dough down. Turn into well-greased, 8 inch round, 1 1/2 or 2 quart casserole. Let rise in warm place until light, 30 to 40 minutes. Bake at 350 degrees for 40 to 50 minutes, until golden brown. Brush with soft butter and sprinkle with salt. Makes one round loaf.
White Bread-Cathy Stevenson-Meyring
4 cups warm water & 1/2 cup powder milk or
3 cups milk plus one cup water
1/2 cup sugar
1 Tablespoon Salt

MIX IN:
1/2 cup shortening, margarine, or butter melted
4 cups flour
2 Tablespoons Yeast added with flour (2 packets yeast)

MIX WELL
Add an Additional:
6-8 cups flour

Knead & let rise. Put in pans, let rise again for about 1 hour. Bake at 350 for 30-35 minutes.
Yields 2-3 loaves
Sharon’s Whole Wheat Bread

Use Hard White Wheat

9 cups fresh ground hard white wheat
3 cups white flour
2 T Salt
½ cup powder milk

Mix slightly

Add:
½ cup canola oil
½ cup honey or sugar
2 T lecithin
3 eggs
5 cups very hot water from tap

Mix till moist

Add:
2 ½ T yeast
Mix 10 minutes

Add more flour if needed

Let rise. Flour counter. Cut into four equal pieces. Press out and roll to make loaf. Flour outside. Place in un-greased pans. Bake 400 degrees for 20-25 minutes.

Variations:
Add 2 cups 6 grain flour for 1 cup whole wheat flour
Can add cranberry dried things for fruit

Can roll and add butter, cinnamon and sugar and roll to make cinnamon loaf

Swedish Limpa (Rye) Bread-Pam Henderson

1 pkg (2 1/2 tsp) dry yeast
1/4 c warm water
3/4 c milk
3 T Molasses
2 T butter
51 1/2 tsp aniseed
1 tsp salt
1 tsp freshly grated orange zest
1 c rye flour
1 1/2 - 2 c all-purpose flour

Put flours, orange zest, salt and aniseed in breadmaker. Make well in center of mixture and put in yeast. Drop in butter. Pour over top water, milk and molasses. Set breadmaker to "dough" setting and turn on. When dough is mixed and risen, divide dough in two and hand-shape into 2 oblong small loaves, or 1 large round loaf.
Let rise until about doubled. Prick top of loaf/loaves with a fork making a decorative pattern.
Bake at 375 in the middle of the oven for 30-40 minutes for a single loaf and 20-30 minutes for the smaller loaves. Bake until they are browned and sound hollow when the bottoms are tapped.

EASY Monkey Bread-Pam Henderson

1 pkg unbaked frozen roll dough, partially thawed

1 package butterscotch pudding, any kind

1/2 c brown sugar

2 tsp cinnamon

1/4 c butter, melted

Note: If using large bundt pan, use ALL the frozen rolls. If using the regular size bundt pan, use only 18 rolls.

Spray bundt pan with PAM. Break rolls in half. Put half of the halved rolls in the bottom of the bundt pan. Sprinkle with half of the dry butterscotch pudding mix, 1/4 c brown sugar, 1 tsp cinnamon and 2 T melted butter. Layer with remaining rolls. Sprinkle over the top, the rest of the ingredients, ending with the butter.
Let rise until rolls have doubled. You can leave this overnight.
Bake about 15 minutes according to the temperature noted on the roll package.
Let cool for 10 minutes. Turn monkey bread out onto a serving plate and pull off pieces to enjoy.

Did you come to your Visiting Teaching Interview at Linn's? If you did you were able to have a taste of her yummy Almond Tart. We have the recipe for you!

Almond Tart
1/2 t to 1 t almond extract
1 cup less 1 T flour
1 cup less 1 T sugar
1 cup melted butter
2 eggs
1 T chopped or sliced almonds
sugar

Mix first 5 ingredients together and pour in greased round pie pan or tart pan. Sprinkle with almonds and sugar.
Bake 25 minutes at 350 degrees. Makes 1 tart (regular size pie pan)

Here is the recipe for the jello dessert that Nikki Waller made for the New Member BBQ:

Crust:
3/4 c butter, crushed
3/4 c broken up pretzels
3T sugar
Mix and press into a 9/13 baking dish. Bake at 350 for 10 minutes. Let cool.

Middle:
8 oz of softened cream cheese
8 oz of softened whip cream
1 cup sugar
Mix well and spread over the pretzel layer. Be sure to completely cover the crust so that the next layer does not seep into the crust.

Topping:
1 pkg Strawberry Jello
1 1/2 c boiling water
1 pkg frozen strawberries-do not drain
Mix Jello with water and dissolve completely. Add strawberries. Let cool to room temperature. Pour over cream cheese mixture. Refrigerate for a couple of hours prior to serving.

Bonnie Knapp's Lesson: "Errand of Angels"

The mission or errand of Angels is to minister unto the needs of God’s children as He directs them. (Moroni 7:22) When we are on the errand of Angels, the mission that is entrusted to us is to teach, warn, rejoice, comfort, guide, protect, nurture, minister to needs, act as instruments in the hands of God–-in other words, to give service to others.

Sister Bonnie D. Parkin told us that “Today, we . . . have opportunities to serve as ‘instruments in the hands of God to bring about this great work.’ What does it mean to be an instrument in everyday terms? I think it means to nurture others. Joseph Smith called it acting ‘according to those sympathies’ in our hearts.” (Bonnie D. Parkin, Sweet Moments, Ensign, Nov. 2005)

The prophets and the scriptures tell us that service “Service is a characteristic of Christ’s followers–a divine quality.” (Elder Carlos H. Amado Of the Seventy, Ensign, May 2008) When we serve we are acting as the Lord’s agents on His errand. (D&C 64:29) How can we know the master if we have not served Him? (Mosiah 5:13) We serve the Master when we serve others. (Mosiah 2:17)

When we give service both the servant and the served experience the love of the Lord. Through serving we come to know the Lord. Service makes us strong in our faith and useful in His kingdom. Service gives us purpose and courage in life and brings us closer to God. When we serve we refine our divine nature. We are taught to love and understand our fellowmen and we forget about our personal desires because we are thinking of the needs of others. service allows us to develop the virtues that the Savior possesses. The more we give of ourselves, the more our capacity to serve, understand and love will grow.

“[A]s women we are pretty hard on ourselves! Believe me when I say each of us is much better than we think. We need to recognize and celebrate what we’re doing right. Much of what we do seems small and insignificant–just a part of daily living. . . . If we are in tune with the Spirit, if we are seeking the Lord and His guidance, if our direction is to return to our Father in Heaven . . . we have become instruments in the hands of God. . . . There are countless ways to be instruments in God’s hands. . . . The Prophet Joseph said of such efforts, ‘If you live up to your privileges, the angels cannot be restrained from being your associates.” (Bonnie D. Parkin“Sweet Moments” Ensign, Nov. 2005)

President Kimball told us that “The righteous woman’s strength and influence today can be tenfold what it might be in more tranquil times.” (President Spencer W. Kimball, Ensign, Nov. 1978) There is much for us to do as women of the Lord’s church–when it all seems to much to bear–please remember :

“. . . fear not, little flock; do good” (D&C 6:34) [for] “. . . I will go before your face. I will be on your right hand and on your left, . . . my Spirit shall be in your hearts, and mine angels round about you, to bear you up.” (D&C 84:88

Let us never forget that we are engaged in the Lord’s work. You are so often, the angels who are round about us bearing each other up. Thank you for being instruments in His hands, doing His great work

A Child's Prayer

My sister Adalyn and I were playing with a watering hose in the back yard. We stuck it down a gopher hole about 5 feet. It got stuck really good. My sister and I thought maybe a gopher was grabbing onto it hard, but mom told me it might have been stuck between some roots. When dad got home, mom told dad, but dad didn’t believe us, so he went outside and he tugged and tugged and he couldn’t get it out. I was feeling really sad because it was the longest garden hose and mom said we might need to cut it off. I offered $3.00 but mom didn’t accept.

The next morning, I woke up about 6 am and went outside, still in my PJ’s, before anyone else was awake. I got the shovel out and dug a little more at the hole mom had started the day before, which was about 3 feet deep. I still couldn’t get the hose out. I turned on the water full blast and there was a little bit of water in the hole. I used that tiny bit of water to be my guide. I dug a little in the mud, and then I prayed to Heavenly Father saying, “Please help me to get the hose out before anyone is awake so that mommy won’t have to buy a new hose”. When I opened my eyes, there was a big pool of water. I thought the hose might be loose. I pulled on it and it came straight out. I think it must have been pushing it’s way out, but most importantly, I think that one little prayer got the hose out. I’d like to share my testimony that I know the church is true and I know that every prayer is answered.

Making your prayers more meaningful. Alma 37:37

Principle #1: Counsel with the Lord in all our doings.
When we recognize the relationship between ourselves and Heavenly Father, prayer becomes more comfortable and instinctive. He is our Father and we are his children. As we ask in faith, we can receive revelation upon revelation and knowledge upon knowledge and come to know the mysteries and peaceable things that bring joy and eternal life. As we recognize that everything was created spiritually before they were made temporally, morning prayer becomes the spiritual creation of your day. During the day, we receive strength from our morning prayer. This strength is the answer to our prayer and personal revelation. By recognizing Heavenly Father's answer, we can offer a silent prayer of gratitude, thus keeping "a prayer in our heart" during our daily activities. At the end of the day, we report back to Father. We review the events of the day and express heartfelt thanks and gratitude. We repent and with the assistance of the Spirit, identify ways we can do better tomorrow. Thus our evening prayer builds upon our morning prayer and then prepares us for our next morning prayer. They are all related, linked together, helping us to obtain perfection.

Principle #2: Heartfelt Gratitude
The most meaningful and spiritual prayers can be prayers which contain many thanks and few requests. Elder Bednar recommends that periodically you and I offer a prayer in which we only give thanks and express gratitude. Ask for nothing. Simply let your soul rejoice, striving to communicate appreciation with all the energy of your heart.

Principle #3: Pray for others with real intent and a sincere heart.
Petitioning Heavenly Father for the blessings we desire in our personal life is good and proper. However, praying for others, both those who love us and those who despitefully use us is also an important element of meaningful prayer. Just as expressing gratitude more enlarges the conduit for revelation, so does praying for others with all our energy.

Our prayers can be more meaningful when we pray always, counsel with the Lord in all our doings, express heartfelt gratitude and pray for others. The prayers of the prophets are childlike in their simplicity and powerful because of their sincerity.

CONFESSIONS OF A SHOPAHOLIC~~~RELIEF SOCIETY TREASURE TRADE

We had our highly anticipated "Treasure Trade" Tuesday, February 17th. It was a HUGE success. We had LOTS AND LOTS AND LOTS AND LOTS of donated items. We started off the evening by having 2 brief classes on organization. Jamiee gave us great tips on how to keep the clutter down in your children's rooms. She showed us a great tracking system for chore lists for your children and suggestions on storage for their rooms. Sara had tips on paper organization and filing important papers. Trish had a GREAT idea of scanning important documents into your hard drive and then shredding the paper. Debbie showed a decorative ribbon holder that you can make at our October Enrichment night. Pam won the highly coveted "Door Prize" which was a "Diva" dustpan and small brush.

We sent the "shoppers" out in groups of 10 for 4 minutes each. Each sister got to choose 1 thing from one of the 4 rooms; Room 1~Christmas Dec & Linens Room 2~Children/Baby Items Room 3~Books, CD's, Videos, Dishes & General Kitchen and Outdoor Items Room 4~Clothing, Shoes, Bags/Purses, Home Dec, Furniture, Art.

Each shopper got two 4 minute shopping turns and then it was a "Free For All". We held a drawing for the Changing Table and Secretary. Nicole won the Changing Table and Marnell Hanson won the Secretary. There were several items left at the end of the evening and some of the members of the Oxnard Spanish Wards came and took items they needed.

We had delicious Chocolate Desserts as we shopped. It was a great evening!
